Mignonette "Mimi" Olson has coasted most of her 41 years. At least since her father failed to return to pick her up while she was staying with his family up at a small wilderness lake in Minnesota. Her philosophy is to just let it slide, and this works just fine at her job as a phone operator who can contact the dead. She has returned to the lake every summer, but this summer the matriarch-great-aunt has died leaving the family property to be shared with the descendants. Real estate development and building of huge McMansions around the lake has driven up prices, and the extended family sees that this might be a chance to cash in -- pay for tuition, a new car, whatever.

While skinny dipping at the lake -- an Olson-women tradition -- Mimi loses her bathing suit and trying to make it back to her cabin naked she runs into Joe, a gorgeous, rich, germaphobic overachiever. His twenty-something genius son, Prescott, has built the neighboring McMansion, and Joe is up for a visit. Although this looks like a clash of the old values (Mimi) versus the new (Joe), in fact Mimi is just too used to letting things slide to take a stand.

However, she is not as able to ignore things such as an abandoned dog, when Prescott breaks his leg, or when her little sister shows up pregnant and needs Mimi to help out. In spite of herself she pitches in and even begins to care about these people and their relationships. She especially would like to care about Joe.

Will the Olsons sell their land and give up skinny dipping?
