Esmee Hamilton brings her young sister Sorcha to London after having been thrown out of their Scottish home by Esmee’s stepfather. While Esmee thinks that she could take care of herself, she decides to take Sorcha to her biological father - Esmee's mother had declared that Sorcha was the product of an affair with Alasdair MacLean, a gambler and wastrel. Even though he had no idea that he had fathered a child in Scotland, he appears to be wealthy enough to provide decent care for his daughter so Esmee sets about convincing Alasdair to live up to his obligations.
