Jove Books originated as Pyramid Books, which was founded in 1949. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich bought Pyramid in 1975 and changed its name to "Jove."

In 1979 Jove was bought by The Putnam Berkley Group, Inc, created when Putnam acquired Berkley in 1965. After being operated for a time as a separate company, Jove evolved into an imprint of The Berkley Publishing Group. In 1996 the company was bought by the British publisher Penguin Group. The new owners merged Putnam and Berkley with Penguin Group USA to form Penguin Putnam Inc. and kept Jove as an imprint.

The Jove imprint is known for such significant best-selling authors as Nora Roberts, Catherine Coulter, Steve Martini, Jayne Ann Krentz, Dick Francis, and W.E.B. Griffin.
