Biography
Sara Seale, the pen name for Mary Jane MacPherson (d. 11 March 1974) and/or A.D.L. MacPherson (d. 30 October 1978), published over 45 novels, many of which revisited a theme of an orphaned heroine who finds happiness. She also employed blind or disfigured (but still handsome) heroes as standard characters.

Seale was a hugely successful author for Mills & Boon, starting her career in the 1930's and continuing for several decades. She reached the pinnacle of her career in the 1940s and 1950s. As with other M&B authors, Seale found great financial success, earning several thousand pounds a year for her writing (£2,370 in 1949, £3,105 in 1952). (Note 1) Like her fellow authors, Seale's earnings were a combination of royalties from her novels and payments for serialization rights from various women's magazines.

The chapter notes to Joseph McAleer's Passion's Fortune indicate that Seale's works were so popular that readers purchased both the serialized versions in magazines and the books when released. He aided the reading public by ensuring that her work appeared with the same title in both formats (there were often different titles given to the two versions). (Note 2) While Seale's success as a serialized author was great, McAleer notes in several places of his work that her relationship with the process, including famous and dominant Woman's Weekly editor, Winifred "Biddy" Johnson, was often contentious. Johnson, who largely invented the still-popular Marriage in Name Only (MINO) plot device, capitalized on Seale's skill with this type of story.

She was also one of the early authors the publisher distributed in the newly-opened post-World War II markets of Germany and the Netherlands. (Note 1)

As a Harlequin Presents author, Sara Seale wrote two books. Writing for the Harlequin Romance imprint, she published 35 titles.
Book Description
Awakening in the hospital, Jarred Bryant has no recollection of the plane crash that nearly killed him. At first, all that remains familiar is the beautiful woman at his bedside: his soon to be ex-wife, Kelsey. Then come the fleeting, fragmented, terrifying visions — hinting at a conspiracy involving those closest to Jarred. Struggling to grasp the shadowy images that flutter just beyond his consciousness, Jarred clings to a marriage that feels hopelessly shattered. When a harrowing near miss convinces Jarred that both their lives are in danger, he knows he must win back the trust of the woman he loved so passionately...

Biography
Borned Jane Sutherland MacLeod on January 20, 1908 in Glasgow, Scotland, the daughter of Elizabeth Allen and John MacLeod. She was actually named Jane, but her grandfather complained it was not Scottish enough, and it was changed to Jean. Her father, who was a civil engineer, moved her family with jobs. Her education began at Bearsden Academy, continued in Swansea and ended in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

She worked in a sweet shop. She moved to North Yorkshire, England to marry with Major Lionel Walton on January 1, 1935[4][2], an electricity board executive, who died in 1995. They had a son, David Walton, who died two years before her. She died on April 11, 2011 at 103 years.

Jean S. MacLeod started writing stories for the magazine The People's Friend, before sold her first romance at Mills & Boon in 1936. Her debut novel was Life For Two. She also published under the name Catherine Airlie. She wrote contemporary romances, most of them were set in her native Scotland, or in exotic places like Spain or Caribbean, places that she normally visited for documented. From 1948 to 1965, she also published under the pseudonym of Catherine Airlie. She was the first author published in the Mills & Boon Romance Series. As an author for Harlequin Romance, Jean S. MacLeod published 55 novels.

In a 2009 interview with The Daily Mail, MacLeod recounted an encounter with author Barbara Cartland:

Mrs MacLeod was a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association and as a result, knew famed romance novelist Barbara Cartland.

She said: 'Mills & Boon always had a champagne tent on Ladies' Day at Ascot for their authors. One year, Barbara sauntered over and dismissively asked, "Wearing the same outfit twice, Jean? Are things really that hard?"

'I didn't dignify it with a response - she was known for her sharp remarks.'

A pseudonym (pen name, penname) is a fictitious name assumed by a writer for purposes of publication.

Authors take pseudonyms for a variety of reasons. Some authors prefer the privacy of anonymity. In some cases, a publisher may ask an author who publishes in more than one genre or subgenre to adopt a pen name in order to avoid reader confusion.

Biography
Personal life
Eleanor Alice Burford was born in September 01, 1906 – not in a romantic manor house, or even on a windswept Cornish moor, but in the prosaic South London suburb of Kensington. Her father, Joseph Burford, was something of an odd-job man, with no steady profession, but he quickly passed on his great love of books to his young daughter. She was an avid reader from the age of four onwards.

She was also captivated by the city of her birth. "I consider myself extremely lucky to have been born and raised in London," she later wrote, "and to have had on my doorstep this most fascinating of cities with so many relics of 2000 years of history still to be found in its streets. One of my greatest pleasures was, and still is, exploring London. Circumstances arose which brought my school life to an abrupt termination, and I went hastily to a business college where I studied shorthand, typewriting and languages. And so I had to set about the business of earning a living."

In her early twenties, she married a leather merchant, George Percival Hibbert (she was his second wife), who shared her love of books and reading. "I found that married life gave me the necessary freedom to follow an ambition which had been with me since childhood; and so I started to write in earnest."

She died on January 18, 1993 at sea, somewhere between Greece and Port Said, Egypt.

Writing career
At first, Eleanor tried to emulate her literary heroes – the Brontës, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo and Leo Tolstoy – and during the 1930s she completed nine long novels, all of them serious psychological studies of contemporary life. However, none of these were accepted for publication.

She published her first novels in 1941 under her maiden name: Eleanor Burford, under this pseudonym she signed 32 novels until 1962.

In 1948, she signed her first book under the prolific pseudonym Jean Plaidy, used to published historical novels.

From 1950 to 1953, she signed 5 novels as Elbur Ford, from 1952 to 1960 she used the pseudonym Kathleen Kellow to signed 8 novels, and since 1956 to 1961, she signed 5 novels as Ellalice Tate.

In 1960, she signed one novel as Anna Percival and her first novel as the pseudonym Victoria Holt, eserved to sign her popular gothic romances.

She created her last pseudonym Philippa Carr in 1972.
