Cassie Edwards is "the world's most successful author of American Indian historical romance novels" (Leonards, Telegraph), and published her 100th book in August 2007.

Edwards also recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary, and resides in Mattoon, Illinois.

Allegations of Plagiarism
In January 2008, Edwards became embroiled in a plagiarism scandal when a romance blog noticed some similarities between her works and uncredited nonfiction passages.

A fully up-to-date list of ALL instances found can be downloaded here (Warning - PDF).

Initial Allegation
On Monday 7 January 2008 the romance review and comment blog Smart Bitches, Trashy Books reported that they had found passages in a number of Cassie Edwards's novels which bore striking similarities to passages in published works of non-fiction. 1.

The owners of the site contacted two of Edwards' Publishers, and received a canned response from Penguin, and the following from the Signet:

<blockquote>Signet takes plagiarism seriously, and would act swiftly were there justification for such allegations against one of its authors. But in this case Ms. Edwards has done nothing wrong.

The copyright fair-use doctrine permits reasonable borrowing and paraphrasing of another author’s words, especially for the purpose of creating something new and original. Also, anyone may use facts, ideas and theories developed by another author, as well as any material in the public domain. Ms. Edwards’s researched historical novels are precisely the kinds of original, creative works that this copyright policy promotes.

Although it may be common in academic circles to meticulously footnote every source and provide citations or bibliographies, even though not required by copyright law, such a practice is virtually unheard of for a popular novel aimed at the consumer market.2</blockquote>
This statement was later retracted (see below).

The news was also picked up by Hillel Italie, of the Associated Press, who spoke to Edwards:

"A popular U.S. romance novelist alleged to have lifted work from other texts acknowledged she sometimes "takes" her material "from reference books" but added she didn't know she was supposed to credit her sources." (9 January 2008)

Further investigation
Italie followed this up with further reports on the 10th of January (which includes comments from Nora Roberts) and the 11th of January as further details emerged and as Signet, one of Cassie Edwards's publishers, reviewed its position, stating "Our original comments were based on Signet’s review of a limited selection of passages. We believe the situation deserves further review. Therefore we will be examining all of Ms. Edwards’ books that we publish, and based on the outcome of that review we will take action to handle the matter accordingly. We want to make it known that Signet takes any and all allegations of plagiarism very seriously."

On the 12th of January reports about the allegations appeared in the New York Times and the Telegraph.

While many of Edwards' sources, most notably texts by Luther Standing Bear, were old enough to be public domain, further investigation revealed copying from documents still under copyright, such as an article by Paul Tolmé about black-footed ferrets.

Tolmé wrote an article for Newsweek on the 15th of January 2008, and described the context in which his text makes its appearance in Edwards' novel, and took the opportunity to give the reader further information about black-footed ferrets. This eventually spawned fundraising in the Romance Community for the cause.

Copying Fictional Works
On Jan 13, prose in Edwards' novel Savage Dream was found to have some statistically improbable similarities to the 1929 Pulitzer Prizewinning novel, Laughing Boy - a work both fictional and still protected under copyright law.

Resolution
In April 2008 publisher Signet broke with the author. CBC.ca News, April 19, 2008
The subgenre, which is sometimes referred to as romantica (a trademark of Ellora's Cave Publishing) got its start in ePublishing/small press. High volume sales showed New York publishers there was an untapped market for erotic romance that they could fill and since 2005 they have incorporated new imprints to meet the demand of readers. Stats for erotic romance are difficult to verify as publishers tend to lump erotic romance in with established categories such as historicals, contemporaries, paranormals and other subgenres. Erotic romance writers who are members of RWA have petitioned unsuccessfully within the organization for a separate subgenre category under RWA's Golden Heart and RITA contests.

Erotic romance novels have romance as the main focus of the plot line, and they are characterized by strong, often explicit, sexual content. The books can contain elements of any of the other romance subgenres, such as paranormal elements, chick lit, hen lit, historical fiction, etc. In fact, many erotic romance novels are often categorized by one of the categories already defined in the industry. As a result, reader unhappiness has been noted in the blogosphere as to whether romance has too much sex. Dear Author, a blog noted for its watchdog review of the romance industry with industry professionals such as Nora Roberts commenting frequently on pertinent romance issues, has discussed the subject of erotic romance at length. See Oversexualization of Romance for one such discussion.

Erotic romance novels take the reader beyond the bedroom door where more traditional romance does not breach that barrier. The sex scenes, while explicit, are there for the purpose of character development. Erotic romance should not be confused with pornography. Works of pornography consist of sexual acts without a plot line. Erotic romance however includes well-developed characters and at least one primary plot with the possibility of subplots. The primary and/or subplots can stand alone without the explicit sex, but the characterizations in the story will suffer dramatically if the sexual content is removed.

Erotic romance writers generally have more flexibility in pushing the envelope of erotic romance than authors for traditional print publishers, although this has changed dramatically since 2005 when NY publishers began to explore the subgenre with lines such as Aphrodisa, Avon Red and others. With ePublishing, the writer has even greater leeway in most instances to write on subjects that in the past have been taboo, such as menage, BDSM, gay lit and other topics. There are however, a number of subjects still considered off limits, even in erotic romance. Themes such as pedophilia, incest, and bestiality are discouraged by all publishers, and the reputable ePublishers and print publishers will not accept submissions that contain such themes as part of the overall character ARC.

Small press and ePublishers still remain the stronghold of the subgenre, and the market is still a strong one as is evident by the phenomenal growth of Samhain Publishing which has grown since its start in 2006 to be one of the leading ePublishers in the industry with a strong list of erotic romance from new and upcoming authors to such well-established authors such as Lucy Monroe, Jaci Burton and others.

Ellora's Cave Publishing, an electronic publisher which focuses predominantly on erotic romance, became the first electronic publisher to be recognized by the Romance Writers of America as a legitimate publisher. Both Ellora's Cave Publishing and Samhain Publishing have partnered with New York publishers to expand some of their works into mass market. Ellora's Cave with Pocket Books and Samhain Publishing with Kensington Books.

Erotic romance novels can range from short story to single title length. All publishers currently have some form of erotic romance or erotica imprint. As a subgenre of the Romance genre, erotic romance is part of the Romance Writers of America project that is categorizing and detailing romance authors of all subgenres in the romantic fiction market.

COME HOME TO TRAGEDY. One house stood alone on Nob Hill, where a short while before many stately mansions had towered. And young Jessica Taylor's homecoming was a bewildering shock when she discovered that her parents and sister had perished in the cataclysmic San Francisco earthquake and fire. The house stood ... and was now hers. But ownership was no consolation for her grief. Worse than that, ownership created many new problems. Wherever she looked, she could see only ashes, desolation ... and unfriendly faces. Unreasonably -- or was in unreasonably? -- her former neighbors seemed to blame her for the tragedy. Then, like vultures, complete strangers moved in to claim shares of the inheritance. Jessica needed every ounce of courage and determination she possessed -- but when she saw her sister's ghost, even those qualities threatened to flee...

The Devil's Shadow is a novel by romance writer Sally Wentworth that depicts the struggle between two sisters over a period of several years.

Synopsis
Charlotte Page ran into Craig Bishop at the Sandowne Races. She'd never forgotten him, ever since her sister first brought him home to the Abbey six years ago.

It had been love at first sight. Not that he was interested in her, with her glamorous sister Verity to hold his attentions.

Charlotte was no longer a teenage tomboy. She'd grown into a beautiful and sophisticated woman whom Craig could love. They develop a strong relationship aided by things that they have in common. However, her father unexpectedly dies and she has to call back Verity in order to deal with the inheritance.

Verity does come back but now she sees them together she tells her sister she will have her vengeance because Charlotte had caused her split from Craig. In the mean time, the two sisters have to decide what to do with the estate that was to big and expensive to manage. Eventually Charlotte admits it and agrees to have it split into smaller apartments.

One night, Verity implies that she had been intimate enough with Craig which he strongly denies. Charlotte feels hurt and decides to leave him. The following morning he discovers a mutual friend in her apartment and draws the conclusion that they had slept together in spite of the fact that Charlotte denies it.

The next day Charlotte forces him to meet her and explains everything.

Characters
Charlotte is a very typical romance character. She is evolving from the ugly duckling to the love interest in the novel quite quickly. However, she lacks credibility especially in some of the key scenes in the plot (mainly the one in which she causes he sister's split from Craig).

Craig is far from the alpha-type but he is still strong enough to be admired by seemingly all females in the novel.

Verity is the stereotype nemesis of the protagonist but the author does not give enough clues about her, except the poor relationship with her father and sister.

Translations
The novel has been translated into Romanian by Cezar Niculescu at Alcris Publishing House under the title Dragoste cu umbre (1994).

Slash fiction is a form of GLBT fiction that is primarily written and read by women. The genre has a strong emphasis on romance and erotic romance. "Pro slash" is a term referring to professionally published GLBT writings that slash readers especially like, such as gay romance novels. Some pro slash authors have also written slash fan fiction or original slash. However, because fan fiction is looked down upon by many professional editors, pro slash writers have been said to be discouraged from speaking publicly about any slash fiction they may have written.

The term slash is usually used in reference to male homoerotic fiction. Femmeslash (femslash) is the term often used for female homoerotic fiction.

Yaoi and yuri
A related homoerotic fiction genre is yaoi, which grew out of the Japanese fan fiction community. Like slash, yaoi is primarily written and read by women, and like slash, yaoi emphasizes romance and erotic romance. Yaoi draws its inspiration from manga and anime, although some yaoi takes the form of written fiction. Like slash, the yaoi community has original fiction writers. Their stories are often called original yaoi.

Yaoi writers are sometimes treated differently by the professional fiction community than slash writers are. Whereas slash fan fiction is usually inspired by media stories featuring heterosexual men, yaoi fan fiction is often inspired by shonen ai, a Japanese genre of male homoerotic manga and anime that is professionally marketed to teenage girls. Because fan fiction is not regarded with the same degree of hostility by Japanese publishers as in the West, yaoi writers and artists are sometimes hired to produce shonen ai. Unlike pro slash authors, they are under less pressure to hide their amateur works. As a result, the term yaoi may be used to describe professionally published homoerotic works that have a stronger erotic content than shonen ai.

Yaoi refers to male homoerotic fiction. The term yuri refers to female homoerotic fiction.
What happens when three sexual deviants challenge one another to a friendly no-sex wager? Chaos. Or is it the truth, fueled by sexual tension? That is exactly what happens when Desiree's two hunky pals call her bluff.

ADULTS ONLY Excerpt:

"Are we making it easier for you?" he asked, with a wicked glint in his eye. She couldn't find the words to describe how she felt. All she could do was stare at his cock and admire the way it protruded from his body like a battering ram. She longed to touch it. His smiled widened as she pulled against her restraints, eager to have him in her mouth. As though sensing her need, he wrapped his fingers around it and gave it a few quick pumps, his efforts resulting in a droplet of clear liquid forming on the end.

The sound of Tully's jeans hitting the floor came to her ears but she did not dare take her eyes off Gamble. He was the one she longed to see, to touch, to taste, and she crooned like a hungry animal.

Gamble nodded over her head, a subtle movement that signalled something to Tully. What they were planning, she didn't know, but she certainly hoped it was devious.

She felt Tully's hands on her again, his fingers lacing into her bra. He tugged it down in one mighty pull and freed her breasts, his naked hips smacking against her as he did. She felt his erection, bare, hot, and hard against the back of her thigh.

"Oh, Des." Gamble groaned appreciatively his eyes wide as he openly appraised her naked body. Instantly, his fingers wrapped gently around one firm globe giving it an appreciative squeeze. He closed in on her and then brought his mouth to her taut red nipple. He flicked the tip of his across it, pausing every so often to suck it to a harder point.

"I always knew you'd be hot, but this is spectacular," Tully said breathily from behind her, while roving his hands over her body.

She blushed under their praise. The bet was off as far as she was concerned, and if the boys gave her any argument, well, it would be worth whatever amount of money it cost her just to feel their bodies pressed against her own. Arching her back, she leaned into Tully's caresses, felt his fingers explore until they found the damp patch that had formed on her panties.

"I think she likes this, Gamble. What do you think?"

Gamble reached out, tentative at first, hovering over the wet spot Tully indicated.

"Do it," she said breathily. "Don't make me wait one second more."

His hand dipped beneath the silk and lace, and his long fingers found her slick furrow and the prominent nub within. With gentle strokes, his fingers worked the sensitive spot until her mouth opened with a silent cry. She couldn't speak. The pleasure was too intense. Seeing this, he pulled his hand out.

Jutting her buttocks toward Tully, she felt him act in accordance with his hands along her thigh and hip. His lips brushed against the back of her neck, which sent shivers along her spine. Using his teeth, he gently dragged them across her flesh, nipping here and there just enough to make the hair on her body stand up.

"I'm going to explode if I don't feel you, the both of you." She finally found her voice and cried out in protest.

Just then, Gamble pulled away and stood back from her seemingly to appraise her situation with a hunger she could only assume was echoed in her own eyes. A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips, and again, he nodded at Tully.

She allowed him to manoeuvre her until she was bent her over, her mouth only a few inches away from Gamble's prominent cock. With his cock held firmly in his fist, he stepped a little bit closer until the head grazed her lips.

"You want this?" he asked, his voice thick with lust.

She could almost feel his hardness at the back of her throat. An ache that was both pleasure and pain swelled within her belly, she longed for him so. "Yes," she croaked, her voice barely audible.

His hand left his cock to gently caress the side of her face. Then, he brought his other hand up and cradled her head between them, while stepping closer, closing the gap. She moaned as he slowly pushed himself into her waiting mouth.

Just as she had anticipated, the moment was everything she had imagined. The taste of him, a mixture of sweet and salty, brought another groan of pleasure from her as she began tonguing and caressing his rigid shaft. With small thrusts, he rocked his hips to her rhythm.

As Tully's fingers roved, they snagged on the black lacy trim of her panties, and before she knew it, he was tugging them down, but only as far as to her knees. With her buttocks exposed, she moaned again as the blood rushed to the apex at her legs, pulsating there like a heartbeat. She was aware of their hindrance, and the feeling of restraints heightened her arousal. Trapped inside her clothing and pinned between two gorgeous men was one thing she had never experienced before. She'd had fantasies, but now it was actually happening.

A sudden warm sensation alerted her to Tully's presence behind her as he brought his mouth to her exposed pussy. She spared a glance down to see Tully's spread knees and his monstrous wide cock pointing up to where she most longed to feel it ramming inside of her. How ironic, she mused, that he really was big. His hot breath against her silky passage sent a shiver along her spine. As she had anticipated, the contact of his hot, wet tongue gliding along her swollen lips, the firm tip dipping in to her most vulnerable places proved too much for her, and she shuddered as her first orgasm tore through her.

The writing style is emphasized and it may veer from category romance by adding subplots and wandering into thoughts of the character(s) and making statements about our culture or society of the time. Along with this is always a strong romance or burgeoning romance in the main story line, and possibly more than one. The romance is described subtly instead of vividly, with much detail left to the reader's imagination.
Submissions
We are an electronic publisher of sensual and erotic romance seeking creative storytelling and original style. Because we at Cobblestone Press are selective about what we accept, we are looking for authors to set the standard of writing for this new press; authors that show extraordinary ability to weave tales of romance through strong, unforgettable characters, plots that twist and turn with layers of conflict and emotion, and a style that sets them apart from other writers in the market.
Cobblestone Press is a full service publisher. There are NO fees for the author at any point during our publication process. Your book will be edited, assigned an ISBN number, and cover art will be provided.

Royalty rate is 35% of the cover price and will be paid on a monthly basis.

Our contract is for electronic rights for 3 years.

Cobblestone Press is a digital publisher. We currently have no plans to explore print or print-on-demand.
