Rosina Lippi writes under her own name and the penname Sara Donati.

Biography
Rosina Lippi was born on January 14, 1956 in Chicago. She lived for longer periods in Europe and on the East Coast, attended college in Austria where she also taught school for a year before returning to Chicago to continue her education. Her writer's weblog, Storytellling, includes a series of biographical sketches about her upbringing and family.

Lippi got her undergraduate degree in linguistics at the University of Illinois, Chicago campus, and went on to study at the graduate level at Princeton, where she received both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Her first academic appointment after receiving her doctorate was at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she taught linguistics and the occasional creative writing course. She was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in her sixth year at UM, where she was on faculty from 1988-1998. In 1998 she accepted an associate professorship at Western Washington University. In 2000 she resigned her academic post and has been writing full time ever since.

She lives in Bellingham, Washington with her husband and teenage daughter, two dogs and two cats.

Publishing Career Overview
As an academic Lippi published two full length books, two edited volumes and a number of articles in academic journals. She began writing fiction more seriously in 1990, and her first short story, "Letters from Vienna" was published in Glimmer Train Stories in 1992.

Lippi writes across genres. Her contemporary romance novels appear under her own name, while her historical romances have been published under the penname Sara Donati.

In 1998 Lippi's first novel, Homestead, won the PEN/Hemingway award and was short listed for the Orange Prize. Homestead was not marketed as a romance novel. Her second novel, Into the Wilderness, appeared under the penname Sara Donati with Bantam Books and was marketed as historical romance. The fifth novel in the Wilderness series appeared in October 2006. In June of 2006 the contemporary romance Tied to the Tracks (Putnam) was published under her own name.

Lippi keeps a writer's weblog where she discusses matters of research and craft as well as the creative process.

If there is a perjorative term in romance fiction, "bodice ripper" is it. The term, officially, refers to a specific era in romance fiction where the hero forcibly "takes" the heroine, or rips her bodice in prelude to raping her. It is not clear why this particular scenario gained popularity, but today's romance authors and readers view the term "bodice ripper" with disgust due to the violent implications of the phrase.

Authors whose names are commonly associated with the term include Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers. Though "bodice rippers" technically can only refer to historical romance (modern women rarely wearing bodices), the press continues to use the term when discussing the romance genre.

This may have to do with the general lack of respect for the genre, which is still widely referred to as trashy. Most non-romance readers have a very narrow understanding of the range of topics and styles covered, and are reluctant to reconsider their position.

There has been a good deal of public discussion, some of it quite contentious, on whether it is possible to raise the general estimation of the genre, and how best to do that. The RWA has undertaken several approaches to this, including the Look Who's Reading Romance campaign.

Hi Laura -- I'm so glad that you're adding the Mills & Boon stuff. It's a particular area of weakness for me. I am making one small change to your pages, due to the fact that the "&" is a trigger for programming:

Mills & Boon

I learned this when I tried to add Pride & Prejudice -- and kept making myself crazy because I knew I'd done it. There are a few punctuation marks that programmers decided weren't really important and made them triggers for actions (like the @ mark).

--Romancewiki 14:03, 24 June 2006 (PDT)

Yes to the Mills and Boon titles -- as they are hard to purchase here, I am especially weak in that area. I'm working on capturing a lot of the older category lines that were U.S. based right now.

As for gushy, when I get highly personal, I often put my signature on my commentary to make it clear that it's a personal decision (the signature button is the second from the right - you can see the results in my comments here.). I don't normally copy out cover copy because of copyright issues -- also I am genetically incapable of *not* changing words. I must rewrite everything. Whenever possible (and time permitting), I like to give enough about the book to help readers who are seeking things and to highlight key aspects of the text (quotable lines, etc). It depends on the book.

Also, you'll notice that I created a page for Pamela Regis -- you and some of the other professors might want to have your pages as well for biographies, etc.
My bad
I should have left a note explaining the edit. Sleeping Beauty is my second favorite of Ivory's books and I don't find it disturbing at all -- and I don't think I'm alone. So I just wanted to leave some room for various takes.
Judith Ivory's work, also as Judy Cuevas, has won numerous awards, including Romance Writers of America's RITA, Top Ten Books of the Year, and Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice. With two degrees in mathematics, Ms. Ivory never expected to make her living writing novels.

Ms. Ivory's novels are rich and complicated. She is one of the few romance writers whose books are full of truly flawed characters whom you come to love. Her books are often based on familiar fairy tales or folk stories. For instance, Sleeping Beauty is obvious (although some find the book quite dark and disturbing), The Beast based on the beauty in the beast tale, Starlit Surrender (Angel in a Red Dress) is based on the Scarlet Pimpernel tale. The Proposition is a twist on Pygmalion.
