==Book Description==

It is essentially the story of a father and his son. The father is big, crafy, with contempt for the law and absolute faith in his own fists. He bootlegs, gambles, fights, works in the Texas oilfields, beats and murders if necessary. Married to a woman of strong piety and forebearance, he leans on her as his one act of faith yet murders her love with his acts of brutality. With them is a son, who is driven from his mother by his fathers fierce demands for emulation. Growing, the boy suffers, alternately loves and hates his father, acquires his own proud independence, as the father destroys himself, his wife, and the marriage.
