Lesley Norton and her father had come out to Central Africa for the benefit of Mr. Norton's health, but things had not gone too well, and with the failure of their tobacco crop they had begun to feel that they would have to give up altogether. The discovery of mineral deposits on their farm came just at the right time - but they also brought with them the arrogant Spanish engineer, Fernando del Cuero, with his uncaring attitude to the devastation the mining operations would cause. They also brought, poste-haste from England, Lesley's scheming sister Virginia, determined to get most of the spoils for herself - and incidently, to annex 'the most eligible bachelor in Central Africa'.<br />
