The inimitable Martha has remained too, and a colourful assortment of individual characters both humorous and grave. For there is abundant humour in this tale of courage and comradeship, of jealousy and passionate love: and the tragedy of rape and murder and privation is offset by the gaiety and charm with which the author handles domestic comedy.
