Biography
Author Nerina Hilliard was born in England but raised in Australia. She submitted her first novel to Mills and Boon in 1959; however, many of her works were published posthumously. She is often cited as an early favorite of modern authors.
In his book Passion's Fortune: The Story of Mills and Boon, author Joseph McAleer relates a story of Nerina Hilliard's first submission to the publisher. Her cover letter noted that her work:
...could cause problems. For one, the Tuareg, 'although deeply suntanned are supposed to be a Caucasian or "white" race. I mention this in case there might be colour prejudices among some readers... ([1], note the link to download a PDF excerpt from the book)
Hilliard's novel about the Tuareg was never written, and the publisher suggested that she stick to novels about Australia in the manner of authors such as Joyce Dingwell. The letter highlights the cultural mores happening behind the scenes at Mills and Boon as it grew from a smaller house into a worldwide phenomenon.
Nerina Hilliard published one title with the Harlequin Presents imprint. As an author for Harlequin Romance, she published seven titles.
