This book has two scenes that stick in memory well over ten years later. The first is when Alyssa is sitting in a restaurant with her stepmother and some of her friends -- one of the skeletal matrons notes that Alyssa looks "healthy" -- a  veiled insult that implies she's fat. The other women are described as having bony, claw-like hands. I knew the characters being described immediately.

The other scenes was more along the humorous lines. After Alyssa regains her memories, she's on the phone with Adam, who asks her what she's wearing. She immediately details a dull outfit, very neat. His disappointed response is along the lines of "Pity." He's clearly looking for a little phone dirty talk, and she's clueless.

About the Book

When Alyssa Humphrey awakened in the hospital, she was bandaged from head to toe. But that wasn't the worst injury she'd incurred during the near-fatal plane crash.

Alyssa had total amnesia. She was engaged to a charismatic politician--but Alyssa felt chilled by his touch. The Denver mansion, the round of social engagements-nothing was familiar. Slowly, she begins to think that maybe she's not who everyone thinks she is.

Then financial adviser Adam Stryker told Alyssa that the paradise she lived in wasn't what it seemed. Adam's stolid presence was oddly reassuring, but Alyssa knew they'd been enemies before the crash.

Adam had warned Alyssa to be careful-but was her greatest threat from him?
