Her father threatens to marry her to his assistant from America, Matthew Swift, a man who Daisy does not remember fondly. When Matthew arrives and they meet by accident, however, Daisy is surprised to find that Matthew is as handsome and genteel as she would want. In addition, he is willing to give her the freedom to be herself, and althought neither of them want to be bullied into marriage, they fall in love.
