Jewel Sabatino left the dust of Pueblo, Colorado behind when she ran off with a rock-and-roll guitar player. Now she's returning home with a 17-year old son, Shane, and a best friend, Michael, who is dying of AIDS. Though her father disowned her, the rest of her family welcomes her home. She starts up a pie bakery service for restaurants and settles into the house left to her by her great aunt. To tempt Michael to eat, she makes recipes from both her family's Italian restaurant and from the restaurant that Michael used to run in New York City. When Michael's brother, Malachi, finally shows up to see Michael before he dies, Jewel is stunned by how much such a solid man appeals to her. No Place Like Home deals with a wide range of family issues.
