The HOLT Medallion Award was named for Virginia Romance Writers' first elected president, Cynthia Holt, and serves as the acronym for Honoring Outstanding Literary Talent. It has been awarded annually since 1995 and recognizes the achievements of published writers in romantic fiction.

Medallions are awarded to the authors whose books are selected by a panel of romance readers as the best in each of twelve categories. Eligible titles are romance novels - or novels with a strong element of romance - with a copyright date within the year preceding the competition. Winners and Awards of Merit recipients are announced at the Virginia Romance Writers' May meeting.
