Mark Juan Carlos Renfrew, Earl of Everdon, is known as Don Juan due to his many affairs -- after his wife ran away following their marriage, he enjoyed himself without worrying about attachments. When he learns that his missing wife has died, he knows he must marry quickly or endure countless matchmaking mamas. Enter Deirdre Stowe, who hides behind unattractive clothing to avoid marriage; she's in love with a penniless man. But Deirdre promised her parents that she wouldn't refuse a respectable proposal.

The solution devised by Everdon and Deirdre is a fake engagement. This works until Everdon realizes he wants Deirdre and real marriage.

Characters from other books make an appearance, including one of Beverley's more intriguing creations, Ian Renfrew, the Daffodil Dandy.
