Lady Clarice Altwood has been living in the country with her clergyman cousin for the last seven years after refusing the choose a husband from among her suitors. The local baron, Jack Warnefleet, has been away at war, and because of her intelligence, tact and leadership she has become the unofficial authority of the community. Returning home from the Napolionic wars, Jack practically overruns a carriage which has overturned in the road. When he stops to give aid, he finds that Clarice is there already giving orders. Jack comes to appreciate Clarice's standing in the community, and Jack and Clarice find that their strong personalities are as much of an attraction as their physical intimacy.
