From its introduction in 1982 until 1989, the RITA® was known as The Golden Medallion. The 1988 Golden Medallion winners were:

- Short Contemporary: Stolen Moments by Terri Herrington
- Single Title Release: Twilight Whispers by Barbara Delinsky
- Traditional: It Takes A Thief by Rita Rainville
- Young Adult: Does Your Nose Get In The Way, Too? by Arlene Erlbach
