Annabelle Peyton is an impoverished aristocrat determined to save her family by marrying a wealthy peer. Instead she finds herself a wallflower during the season, so she strikes up a friendship with three other "Wallflowers" and they vow to help each other get a husband. Simon Hunt is a fly in the ointment, a commoner - the butcher's son! - who thinks that he can provide Anabelle what she needs. Eventually at a country house party, Annabelle is forced to see Simon in a different light, as the business partner of the host, Marcus Marsden, the Earl of Westcliff.
