Harry O'Dell and Alessandra Lamont are on the run from the mob -- they've after her, and he's vowed to keep her safe. Though Harry, an FBI agent, sees Alessandra as nothing more than a spoiled trophy wife, the fact that the man who's after her is also responsible for the deaths of Harry's wife and teenaged son keeps Harry on the case.

Readers of this book often cite Harry's partner, George Faulkner, as the preferred hero of the novel.
