African American journalist Phillip Benedict is wary when Aurore Gerritsen, a rich and elderly white woman, asks him to ghostwrite her autobiography, especially since she doesn't plan to publish it. Intrigued by her response that he needs to find out what happens to understand to motives, he discovers the secrets of his past, including his long-hidden relationship to Aurore.
