Louise "Low" Downe is the only woman in the mining camp of Piney Creek, Colorado, and thus she gets stuck nursing most of the men in town during a small pox epidimic. When it is over the survivors offer her anything she wants, and she surprises them all by asking for a baby. Max McCord draws the responsibility of sleeping with Low who has not had a bath in months. And even though he is engaged to marry back home, he intends on going through with it because -- after all -- she did nurse him through his illness. But a preacher in town insists that they marry first. Max and Low do reluctantly marry, and then he suggests that she go back home with him to his ranch in Ft. Hauser, Colorado while they try for Low to get pregnant. She agrees, and on the way home she cleans up some and he actually introduces her to his family as his wife.
