While romance author are predominantly female, many men do write in the genre. Naturally, most adopt a female [[pseudonym]] to create the impression that a woman is writing the novel. The common belief is that avid readers would not feel comfortable reading romance fiction if they know the story was written by a man -- however, since the publishers have not really tested this theory, the conventional wisdom remains and male authors become women when writing in the genre.
