Emma's father had died & she was left in charge of his estate. However, the trustees felt that a man was needed to get the job done & they brought in a distant cousin of hers, Nicholas. But she was regulated to being his assisstant. 5 years before, they had been a couple & he was very much in love with her & had asked her to marry him. She had rejected him, however, & ran away from him. He still wanted her though & tricked her into marrying him "to save the estate".
