Leveling the weapon at Gary, the thief took Val roughly by the arm and pulled her toward him.  "One step out that door and the police will be after you," Gary warned. "Not if I kill you first," came the threatening reply. Val felt her knees turn to putty, and she closed her eyes. Then her heart stopped for an instant as a shot echoed through the room.
