The Bastion Club is founded in this first book of the series. All seven members of club are ex-spy types from the Napoleonic Wars who find that they need help selecting their future brides. Tristan Wemyss, Earl of Trentham, has unexpectedly inherited his title and he must marry within a limited amount of time or lose everything he needs to support himself and the aunts and cousins who depend on him. He arrives in London before the season begins to oversee the renovation of the house chosen to serve as the club, but finds that he is fascinated by the young woman living in the house next door. Miss Leonora Carling lives a quiet with her scholarly uncle and brother, but someone has been trying to buy their house and it has been broken into several times.
