Lisa, who works two jobs and cares for her sick mother, is transported 700 years into the past when she touches a magical relic. The wet and naked Circenn, Laird of Brodie, is stunned to see a young woman dressed very strangely and carrying the cursed flask he's been seeking. He'd vowed to kill the person who returned the item, but finds he cannot kill Lisa.

Unlike many time travels where the hero or heroine have no real ties to their home period, Karen Marie Moning sets up a situation where Lisa's presence in her own time is critical -- her mother is dying of cancer and needs her daughter's help.
