When Gay Quillan flies to the Guatemalan jungle to search for her missing father, she finds herself in an eerily different world, still ruled by the ancient Mayan gods. Her father's housekeeper warns her, 'The lake gods took your father -- and those taken are never seen again. They will take you, as well, for they do not like gringos who come to pry into their past. You must leave at once.' But Gay, believing her father is alive, disregards the warning. She is determined to stay until he is found. And one morning she awakes to find herself not in her bed at her father's house, but bound to the sacrificial rock of an ancient temple -- ready to become the latest victim of the Mayan gods.
