The Historical category was one of the original Golden Medallion categories when the RWA established their awards. Historical Series was established in 1990. This appears to be a resurrection of the former Category Historical category. In 1991, the title of the category was flipped to Series Historical. After much back and forth, the title returned to Historical Series in 1994. It appears that in 1995, the designation Historical applied to shorter historical romances. The Historical category became Short Historical in 1996. In 2002, the category name made a brief foray into the world of Short Historical Romance. The name change did not take. After a hiatus in 2002, the Short Historical category name returned. In 2004, the name of the RITA category became Best Short Historical Romance.
