While romance author are predominantly female, many men do write in the genre. Naturally, most adopt a female pseudonym to create the impression that a woman is writing the novel. The common belief is that avid readers would not feel comfortable reading romance fiction if they know the story was written by a man -- however, since the publishers have not really tested this theory, the conventional wisdom remains and male authors become women when writing in the genre.
In addition to men who adopt a female pseudonym or chose to write romance fiction under their own names, many men write romance with their spouses or as part of a writing team.
