Con Somerford has unexpectedly inherited the title of Earl of Wyvern when his uncle dies. When he arrives at Crag Wyvern, he finds Susan Kerslake is the housekeeper, and she may also be running a smuggling ring. The last time he saw Susan, when they were fifteen, she broke his heart and he has not gotten over it in the last eleven years. He is determined to finish up his business and leave the place - he doesn't trust Susan and the place is too creepy for him. But they get caught up in the smuggling and in solving several murders. Plus, Susan wonders if Con will ever forgive her.
