I love to write books that remind me of the old movies I grew up watching with my mom, stories about ordinary people who find the love that makes their lives extraordinary. I would happily live in Mayberry (if it existed and I could convince my family to live without a mall).

Still, as much as I enjoy escaping to gentler, happier places--and writing about them--I also love to read and write about the challenges life inevitably brings. It's fascinating, isn't it, to explore the amazing courage and resilience of people who grow through hard times. Our most important relationships provide some of the toughest, most transforming challenges we can face in this life--and they are the fodder for excellent books, movies and plays.

At present, my family refuses to live anywhere remotely like Mayberry (wah!), so, as we have been compelled to compromise, we make our home in a city with great access to movies and live theatre and bookstores with cushy chairs--plus giant elms, a lazy river and a snow-capped mountain in the distance. Not too shabby!

My husband, daughters, four-legged children and I live in a home previously owned by a woman named Cinderella, who bequeathed us a garden we have tried desperately (and occasionally successfully) not to kill and a pink GE oven that makes the kitchen look like an I Love Lucy rerun. (If you can't have Mayberry...)

When I'm not writing, I love to take long walks with my six-toed dog, belly laugh with friends, plan arranged marriages for my daughters and sneak tofu into my husband's dinner.
