Help:Uploading Images

RomanceWiki supports the ability to upload images, for uses such as book covers or author photographs. However, when uploading an image be careful not claim credit for any image you did not create. Most book covers are released for use in advertising/referencing the book in question, which RomanceWiki does. Before using a photo of an author, however, please attempt to contact the author to see if the photo is available for use outside of the author's own personal webpage.

Finding Pictures Online

All pictures must be uploaded from your computer. If you want to use a picture you find on a website you must first download the image to your harddrive. How you do this depends on which internet browser you are using.

On a PC

• Using Internet Explorer: Right click the picture and choose "Save Picture As...". Then chose the destination folder (the default is likely "My Documents") and you can change the file name at this time.
• Using FireFox: Right click the picture and choose "Save Image As...". Then choose the destination folder (the default is likely "My Documents") and you can change the file name at this time.

On a Mac

• Using Safari: Ctrl-click the image and select "Save Image As...". Then choose the destination folder and you can change the file name at this time.
• Using FireFox: Ctrl-click the image and select "Save Image As...". Then choose the destination folder and you can change the file name at this time.

Remember: Try to name the image something you can easily find again. Many images are auto named with a number string on the website they are from. Use only trusted publisher/author sites or online retailers for images. Untrustworthy sites may infect their images with viruses. This is very rare, but something to be aware of.

How To Upload

You can upload an image by using the Upload file link in the toolbox, which is located on the left side of your screen. This will take you to Special:Upload, a screen with several text boxes to be filled in.

Source filename: This field allows you to choose a file on your local system to upload. On most browsers, next to the top box called Source filename, you will see a Browse... button, which will bring up your operating system's standard file open dialog. Highlight the image file you want and that will fill the name of that file into the text field next to the button.

Destination filename: This is the name of the file on Romance Wiki and is used to link to the image from articles. If JavaScript is enabled, it will be set automatically to the same name as the one you have specified in the Source filename field, but you may change it to any valid name you wish. For the convenience of non-JavaScript users, if the destination field is left blank, the source filename will be used.

• For book covers, it is recommended to use the following style: Cover-Book-Title.jpg.
• For author photos it is recommended to use the following style: Author-Name-photo.jpg. For other pictures, please use a descriptive name.

No spaces are supported in image names, so please use dashes instead.

Summary: In this area, you should indicate what this file is about and where it originated. For book covers, please include a link to the book that this file is a cover image for and note where you originally downloaded the picture. For example (from Image:Cover-Black-Thunder.jpg):

Checkboxes: You may also choose to

• "Watch" the image upload page for any further edits or to
• Ignore any warnings, by clicking the checkboxes. It is recommended to not ignore warnings as there are often minor problems for first time users.

Upload: Press the "Upload" button to finish the upload. This may take some time if you have a slow Internet connection. Submitting this information will upload the image and save the summary.

Note: There is no preview, as there is for editing pages. After the image is uploaded, you can still click the edit button and make changes to the summary, should you make a mistake you did not catch beforehand.

If there is already a file on Romance Wiki with the Destination filename that you chose, you are given the option to save anyway and overwrite the old file (although it remains in the image history), or returning to the upload form and specifying a new filename. Unless you are trying to replace an image file, you will probably want to choose a new filename and not overwrite the existing file.

Adding Images To Articles

To make your uploaded file appear in an article, you need to insert a link to that image. Edit the article where you want the file to appear and add the syntax:

[[Image:Image name|size|right|Caption]]

The "size", "right" and "Caption" parts are optional parameters.

• size is used to determine the size of the image in the article. For most images, you will want a small size to appear. You can use "thumb" there to create a thumbnail (180 pixels wide, default) of the image. Or you can set it using the number of pixels across you'd like the image to be and RomanceWiki will automatically scale the image's height as well. Since cover images are usually taller than wide, a good width is usually 80-100px.
• Right (or "left" or "center") is used to justify the image to the right, center or left side of the window. The default is left. It is convenient for book covers to be justified to the right on the first line of the article to take up the space next to the books stats on the left.
• If you would like a Caption to appear below the image, write the caption as you would like it to appear.

Example: [[Image:'''Image name'''|100px|right]] Would create a picture on the right side, 100px wide with no caption.

If you just want to add the image without any changes or captions all you have to do is add:

[[Image:Image name]]

Important: Image names are case-sensitive. For example, if an image is called Picture.jpg then neither picture.jpg nor Picture.JPG will find it.
