For the 2008 RITA awards, the Romance Writers of America changed their award structure. While in the past, category (or series) romance had been divided into sub-categories -- initially "sweet" and "sensual", later by length with "traditional" romance broken out, the 2008 awards recognized the fact that this differentiation was not required, primarily due to the fact that word counts for all lines were similar.

Historically-related categories to "Contemporary Series Romance" were: RITA®: Best Long Contemporary Series, RITA®: Best Short Contemporary Series, and RITA®: Best Traditional Romance.
