The Historical Romance category was established for the 2008 RITA awards. Previously, historical romance had been divided by length, with one award given for RITA®: Best Short Historical Romance and another for RITA®: Best Long Historical Romance. A third historical category, RITA®: Best Regency Romance, also existed. The Regency category focused on shorter novels that were largely devoid of sensual details the longer historical novels contained. Publishers abandoned the stand-alone Regency titles and the category was renamed RITA®: Regency Historical Romance in 2008.
