A pseudonym (pen name, penname) is a fictitious name assumed by a writer for purposes of publication.
Authors take pseudonyms for a variety of reasons. Some authors prefer the privacy of anonymity. In some cases, a publisher may ask an author who publishes in more than one genre or subgenre to adopt a pen name in order to avoid reader confusion.
