Christina Bower, daughter of a barrister, meets the rakish Earl of Kewischester, Adrien Hunt, for a short interlude at a ball the night before he travels to France. He is injured there in the outbreak of the French Revolution. Three years later, at her cousin's urging, she takes refuge at a country estate when her husband seeks a divorce. It turns out to be the estate of the Earl, who also happens to be involved in rescuing aristocrats from the guillotine.
