Lady Adriana St. Ives is the daughter of an Earl who is disgraced because of an affair. Her father has asked Tynan Spencer, an Irishman, the Earl of Glencove, to marry Riana. The book is about their struggles, not only to get to know each other but to with the prejudices of the time. For example, Tynan takes his seat in Parliament in order to fight for Irish rights, but he cannot let it be known that he is Catholic or he would lose his seat.
