Deborah Silver is about to confront her wealthy father and reject the society marriage he has arranged for her when a man bursts in, intent on killing her father. Unable to pull the trigger, however, - and with the Chicago fire sweeping in - Tom Silver decides to kidnap Deborah instead. When he spirits her off to the Isle Royale, romance blooms despite their circumstances.

Trivia

  • The Hostage, The Mistress, and The Firebrand all share the same central set of events during the fire that set their respective stories in motion. It is heavily suggested that Tom Silver appears in the opening sequence of the Firebrand.
  • The Hostage is also referred to in The Firebrand (also by Wiggs), when the heroine - a bookseller - handled a book named "the Isle Royale"
