In spite of her wealth, Marissa Pierce has chosen to live in Red Creek, Colorado and work as a teacher. One of her students is pregnant, and Marissa consults with the student's uncle, Robert Martinez. Robert has lived a hard life starting as the son of a mother addicted to crack cocaine and leaving home when 14 years old. He is an artisan with a special interest in stained glass. Marissa lived a lonely life, separated from her twin and placed in a boarding school in another country, for which she compensated by overeating and becoming obese.
