The Regency category was introduced into the Golden Medallion competition in 1985. In 2004, RWA changed the names of many categories to include the adjective "Best". Despite the Regency category's almost record-setting run of maintaining the same name -- in 2002, there was a brief flirtation with calling the category Regency Romance -- this name change took effect.
