Lonely and young, a married woman begin correspondence with a man thousands of miles away. When she finally meets him, her Robert cannot be seen in the terrifying man who turns her world upside down.
The letters begin "My sweet Folly", and Folie Hamilton, married and lonely, enters into correspondence with her husband's cousin, Robert Cambourne, who lives in India. Their friendly letters grow increasingly passionate -- until Folie's husband dies and Robert is named guardian of Folie's stepdaughter. When he returns to England, Folie discovers the man she falls in love with via letter cannot be found in the man on the verge of madness she meets.
