Book Description

Widowed Flora Westbury is cook at Alvoe Court, home of the Duke and Duchess of Alvoe. She catches the eye of both Captain William Pritchard, to whom she is attracted, and Ralph, the Alvoe heir. Flora knows her station and thinks she can never marry William, but Ralph's actions create a crisis.

The issues of class, and the changes beginning to affect English society are important, as are the effects of women having little knowledge of sexual matters, an issue which Marie Stopes was seeking to remedy.
