The Historical Romance category was established for the 2008 [[RITA]] awards. Previously, historical romance had been divided by length, with one award given for [[RITA®: Best Short Historical Romance]] and another for [[RITA®: Best Long Historical Romance]]. A third historical category, [[RITA®: Best Regency Romance]], also existed. The Regency category focused on shorter novels that were largely devoid of sensual details the longer historical novels contained. Publishers abandoned the stand-alone Regency titles and the category was renamed [[RITA®: Regency Historical Romance]] in 2008.
