Books numbered 2593 through 2664 were published in 1984. Again classic authors such as Essie Summers and Lilian Peake competed for shelf space with the new generation of Harlequin Romance authors. The public's taste in romance was changing in 1984, and the sweet romances that made the Harlequin name famous were competing for readers of the hotter, sexier Harlequin Temptation imprint, which debuted in 1984. With Temptation, Harlequin moved the focus of its stories more in the realm of the United States, a trend that would eventually emerge in the Harlequin Romance line as well.
