Conveniently wedded, royally bedded!

Six years ago Phoebe Wells was offered $50,000 to leave the Amarnes palace and turn her back on all that she thought she loved. She refused. Now the past is back to haunt her, and she will have to stand fast once again…

The fierce Prince Leopold isn’t interested in widowed Phoebe, but he is interested in her child, his cousin’s boy, whose rightful place is as heir to the throne. Leo knows Phoebe cannot be bought, but she might be persuaded – as his convenient wife…

Excerpt

From the inside cover of Mills & Boon Modern Romance #, November 2009, UK Edition:

Phoebe's eyes widened in shock; she still couldn't see Leo's face, but she could feel the pain emanating from him in sorrowful waves. 'Leo, I'm sorry.'

He turned his head, met her gaze. 'I couldn't let the same happen to you,' he continued, and Phoebe saw the honesty in his eyes. 'Even though I was tempted.'

'Tempted...?'

'You were an inconvenience, remember?' Leo gave her the ghost of a smile. 'At least I thought of you as one until I saw you again.'

Her heart bumped painfully against her ribs. She wanted to ask Leo what he meant, wanted to hope-- needed to. But the future--her son's future--was too overwhelming.

'So what can I do?' she whispered. 'We can't--I can't--' She took a breath and started again, in a stronger voice. 'I won't be bought, and I won't leave my son.'

'I know.' Leo smiled, his mouth curling upwards in a way that made Phoebe's insides tingle with awareness. 'I have another solution.'

He paused, and in that second's silence Phoebe felt as if the room became hushed in expectation--as if everything had led to this moment, this question, this possibility. As if she already knew.

Leo took a step towards her, his hand outstreched. 'Phoebe,' he said, 'you can become my wife.'
