Before she could stop herself, Jane glanced over her shoulder and met the gaze of a predator. The connection was powerful and she felt the impact down to the soles of her feet. The crowd and noise around them seem to recede into the distance as Jane was helplessly ensnared by his stare. Physically, he was Roman’s replica--same imposing height, same black hair and piercing blue eyes, but intuitively Jane knew him. There was an air about him, a sense of being untamed. Roman was a physically imposing man, but he had none of the wildness, rawness about him that Remy did. Maybe, that was why she had given Anthony Roman’s name rather than Remy’s. Named Roman the father of her fictional baby rather than him.

The smile disappeared from Vivian’s face. “Because you need to stop running from who and what you are. I’ve watched you run from yourself. You tell yourself you’re healed, but you’re not.” Jane snorted. Ignoring the interruption, Vivian continued. “You remind me of my sister. You’re hiding in the human world. You’ve let Anthony rob you of the most important part of yourself. Remy, he’s a good guy, but he won’t let you hide.”

“Jane, you have nothing to fear from Remy. He won’t hurt you. Still, the male wolf in him won’t let you escape until he has ruled you out as a potential mate. Think of it as a win-win situation. You either get a hot mate or a hot date.” She peered over Jane’s shoulder, and Jane could tell by the grin splitting her face that Remy was fast approaching.

Turning, she made eye contact with a chest. It was a nice chest, a broad chest. A white, silk shirt hugged the trim torso. Okay, it was more than nice. Jane worked around physically fit people all day, and she had to admit, even covered the chest was a better than nice. Her eyes traveled up, to a perfect pair of lips. Perfect was the only word for them. They were neither too thin nor too full. If she was Goldilocks, she would have to say they were just right. The nose was thin, slightly long. When she stared into his eyes, she forgot to breathe. Dark blue. Electric blue. Incredible eyes. They were heavily lashed, almost feminine. But nothing in their expression was feminine. It was the expression that snapped Jane out of her preoccupation with his looks.

Remy could feel the slight resistance she offered, the drag of her feet, the way she tugged against his hold. It didn’t matter, he continued on to the dance floor. He was in the midst of a primal urge. Since scenting her, making eye contact, his world had narrowed down to her. Getting to her, touching her, and holding her in his arms. Her urge to run made him want to chase. That was all it was, the predator wanting to give chase to the prey. At least that was what he told himself as he forced an unwilling partner on to the dance floor. This was an anomaly. He had never had a problem finding a dance partner. No, normally he had to turn down women. Beat ’em off with a stick. The thought crossed his mind, and a smile of remembrance quirked his lips. Sabine had used that expression once. He had laughed, then, and told her they wanted him to beat them with his stick. She had punched him in the arm, hard.

The DJ announced that this was the last dance before the band returned to play the second set. The music went from fast to slow as Remy stepped out onto the floor. Perfect, he could hold her close, chest to thigh, and feel her sway against him in a parody of sex. Turning, he pulled her into his arms. Though she was stiff, her body fit perfectly, the top of her head even with his chin.

Jane Lyke. She hadn’t said a word, not since she had tried to refuse to dance with him. She didn’t need to; her body was doing all her talking for her. Her body was saying, let me go. Remy wondered at this need to dance with her, touch her. Rather than force the issue, he swayed to the beat of the music, letting rhythm and body chemistry work their combined magic. With every sway of his hips, his erection brushed her abdomen. There was nothing he could do about it; he had been aroused since first meeting her crystalline gaze.

The attraction had been instantaneous, as had been her seeming rejection of it ... and him. It was something Remy was not accustomed to dealing with. The club gave him a steady supply of women, all of whom offered little, if any, resistance. As a male werewolf, most human women found him incredibly attractive, and coupled with his considerable charms, they found him irresistible.

Bending his head down, he buried his nose in her hair and inhaled. Her scent was intoxicating, going straight to his penis, causing it to throb painfully. His arm tightened around her tiny waist, lifting her so his erection fit into the notch between her thighs. His hand slid down and cupped her buttocks. She was wearing skin-tight, black leather pants and the smooth kid leather was warmed by her body heat and hinted at the silky warmth of the skin beneath. Rather than melt into him, she braced her palms against his chest and pushed.

“Let me go.” It was a command muttered between clenched teeth. She looked up, sparks flying from her pale blue eyes.

Ignoring her command, Remy tightened his grip on her ass. His fingers curled around to touch the inside curve of her buttock, dangerous area.

“Why? You smell so good.” He bent for another quick inhalation and then reared back to once again to stare down into her face. It was a beautiful face, full lips that gave a man all kinds of ideas and electrifying eyes that challenged a man to do his worst, or best, depending on how one looked at it. “And you feel even better.” He gave her buttocks a squeeze.

“I didn’t come here to be mauled by some bar-hopping, werewolf Lothario.” Again, she pushed against his chest.

“Yeah?” Remy lifted a brow. “Well, then, why did you come here while you’re in heat? If that’s not an invitation, then I don’t know what is.”

“If you think I’m going to cower at home because of a natural body process, then you’re sadly mistaken.” She glared up at him. “It’s high time men quit using a woman’s natural bodily functions against her.” Deepening her voice, she mimicked a man’s voice as best she could. “Can’t have a woman in the White House, she might PMS at the wrong time, hit the wrong button. Can’t go out when you’re in season unless you want a mate.”

Remy noted she had quit pushing. Her attention was focused completely on him. She was still antagonistic, but there was underlying sexual awareness. There had been since the beginning. He could smell it. That in part was responsible for her animosity, being unmated, she had no idea how to handle the sexual feelings she was experiencing. That was okay, he had plenty of experience and would be more than happy to help her, show her how to deal with them.

“Nah, I don’t want you cowering. Kneeling, definitely, but not in fear.”

“As if I ever would kneel or cower in front of you.” The outrage in her eyes made him want to laugh.

“Don’t be too quick to judge. I can show you a good time on your knees. For that matter, on your back, your stomach, or standing up. The positions are unlimited.”

“Sleeping with all those human women has gone to your head, wolf boy.”

“Oh, darling, you better stop while you’re ahead. You keep issuing these challenges, sooner or later I’m going to accept.” She was practically begging him to take up her challenge.

A silence fell between them, and Remy lifted his gaze to visually search the room. Somehow, during the exchange, they had started dancing. Their bodies had naturally aligned, and they had slowly made their way around the dance floor. She had dropped her physical defense, and was resting against him, letting him guide her around the room. They were now closer to the door leading to the club upstairs than to her table.

It would be so easy to waltz her over to the doorway. Until he got here there, then the easy part would stop, but the fun would begin. Wolf boy. Remy silently snorted. A few minutes alone with him, and she would have no doubts that nothing about him was boyish. He would kiss the little she-wolf senseless. Plunder her mouth as thoroughly as he intended to eventually plunder her body. He was certain she would object, strenuously object, to his kiss. Come to think of it, object was too mild a word; she would probably try to emasculate him. Remy might have met her five minutes ago, but he knew. Something in her tone, her eyes, the air about her, told him she would never be dominated. That she would always put up a fight. Maybe that was why he felt such an instant and strong attraction to her. After all, he was part wolf, and every instinct in him urged him to answer her dare.

The music ended, and couples around them began moving off the dance floor. Jane pushed away from him, and this time, Remy let her. Without another word, she turned and headed back to her table. He assumed she was headed to the perceived safety of Vivian. He watched her thread her way through the throng. Her hair gleamed under the dance-floor lights and swung back and forth across her back in rhythm with her stride. It was a narrow back, encased in white silk. She was dressed in basic colors, black leather pants and a white silk shirt, and given the things he wanted to do to her, with her, it brought to mind an old riddle. What was black and white and read all over? In this case the answer was, Jane Lyke. Because before it was over, he was going to know every line, every curve of her body. He would be able to read her every desire by the trembling of her lips and the shudders of her breath.

Whether she was aware of it or not, she was broadcasting her need for a lover loud and clear, and Remy had no problem reading her signals. Remy bared his teeth as another thought crossed his mind, he was not the only male were in the room. Others were picking up her scent, her signals. That was what had brought him down here earlier. To prevent the males in the place from challenging one another over a female were in season. Instead, he, too, had become entranced by her scent. In a totally out of character urge, he battled the need to grab her and take her. He wanted to shield her from the unwanted attentions of others, but not from his.

Jane reached the edge of the dance floor and turned back. Their eyes met. Remy felt the same gut-wrenching reaction that he had experienced earlier. His skin flushed and heated, and the fine hairs along his limbs rose as if touched by static electricity. He took a step forward. MINE.

Revision as of 04:22, 6 August 2006

In the werewolf world, instinct rules supreme. One instint all werewolves live by is the ability to identify their mates. Another is the need for a pack.

Unwilling to accept the claim of a potential mate, Jane Lyke was brutalized and sent into exile. Slowly she heals and learns to live without the comfort of her pack. Now, even if she could go back, she wouldn’t. She has proven she needs no one, mate or pack.

Unwanted at birth, Remy Silva has spent his entire life living outside the werewolf community. He is perfectly content living his life as an outcast, answerable to no one. As proprietor of the highly successful nightclub The Outcast, he has his pick of women and has no desire to find a mate. Why settle for one, when there are so many available?

When these two meet, sparks fly. Yet neither is willing to admit that this just might be the one. Until another were threatens Jane. Now they will have to face their fears if they want to have a future.

“Remy’s here.”

Jane wanted to curse. She wanted to jump up and run. What could make the night any worse? Everything she’d hoped wouldn’t happen, had. First the male weres, now Remy Silva. Damn. Damn. Damn.

“Where? Has he seen us?” It was all she could do not to jerk around and look for him.

“Yeah. He’s headed over this way.” Vivian nodded her head in the direction over Jane’s shoulder.

Before she could stop herself, Jane glanced over her shoulder and met the gaze of a predator. The connection was powerful and she felt the impact down to the soles of her feet. Vivian threw her head back and laughed at the curse. “True. But all female weres are bitches. It’s a canine thing.”

“Why would you do this?” Jane was completely confounded.

The smile disappeared from Vivian’s face. “Because you need to stop running from who and what you are. I’ve watched you run from yourself. “Jane, you have nothing to fear from Remy. He won’t hurt you. Still, the male wolf in him won’t let you escape until he has ruled you out as a potential mate. Think of it as a win-win situation. Remy, with his good looks and dominant personality, sent my heart beating faster… Jane is a smart independent woman who has proved to the world that she is capable of making it on her own… Ms. Drewry gives the reader wonderfully wicked and sinful love scenes. • "Jayelle Drewry's The Outcast is one super sizzling story! The paranormal elements are so intricately woven into the story that they seem almost realistic and ordinary. After her brutal punishment and subsequent exile, Jane learns to find the strength in herself. I really liked that about her character; although she was smaller and weaker than Remy, she didn't automatically submit to him. In fact, in many ways, she is very similar to Remy. They both learn and grow from the pain in their past...But fate has a way of sneaking up and surprising them. Their desire for each other is immediate and quickly culminates in some scorch-the-screen sexual scenes, and as their need for each other grows, so do their feelings. These two are characters that you could easily fall in love with, rooting for their happy ending as the plot unfolds and the danger to both is revealed. The follow up story to Ms. Drewry's The Other Half, The Outcast is a stand-alone story about werewolves and their mates which will no doubt entice you to pick up the first one." 5 Stars @ Just Erotic Romance Reviews
