Elle James grew up as an Air Force brat, moving from country to country. As an adult, she continued the tradition by joining Army and Air Force Reserves. She now makes her home in Arkansas. In 2000, she and her sister, Delilah Devlin decided to take their writing dreams seriously. The co-authored their first four books before turning individually to their favorite styles. Since then, Elle James has focused on Romantic Suspense with Paranormal elements, when she can get away with it. Her first novel, To Kiss A Frog, was a 2004 Golden Heart winner and was published by Dorchester.

As an author for the Harlequin Intrigue imprint, Elle James has published four novels.
