Emily is a spinster caring for her invalid father and running the family estate since her brother was killed in battle. Piers Verderan comes to town for the hunting -- and meets Emily while he's being tossed out of his ex-mistress's house. It's not an auspicious way to start a relationship. Though Ver has a reputation for darkness and deception, Emily does not see that side of him. Instead, he helps her at every turn.
Beverley's early Regencies contained a light-hearted humor that her later, darker works don't.
