Rica is the daughter of a Strassburg nobleman, who has been allowed to indulge her desire for knowledge and adventure. Solomon ben Jacob visits his hometown of Strassburg to enlarge his knowledge of herbs and healing plants with the local midwife Helga and meets Rica. Although they are made for each other, marriages between Jews and Christians are punishable by death and there are other major obstacles to their happiness.
