Deverell, a member of the Bastion Club, goes to a country house party to meet Phoebe Malleson, a woman his aunt has identified as suitable for marriage. He is intrigued when she ignores him, refuses him, and generally wants nothing to do with him. It turns out that Phoebe is rescuing servant girls who are mistreated, and she does not want a husband getting in the way of her freedom and the rich life she is leading. Deverell has other ideas.
